City of Lynnwood Efforts

Thank you for your interest in our City's activities. The City of Lynnwood is committed to being environmentally responsible with our vehicle purchases and fleet staff are actively pursuing ways to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

In 2007, we purchased our first hybrid vehicle and hope to purchase three more by the end of 2010, and others in the future as job requirements and funding permits. Compressed natural gas and E85 fuels have been considered but the distance to obtain them have made them an impractical choice at this time.

The following are some other ways that we have been moving toward a greener fleet:

Biodiesel- Many of our diesel vehicles have converted to biodiesel which has less air emissions than regular diesel.

Diesel Oxidation Catalysts- These devices reduce emissions of particulate matter by at least 20%, hydrocarbons by 50% and carbon monoxide by 40%. We have 21 vehicles fitted with an additional 6 to be installed in 2009.

Recycling oil and filters-maintenance staff has been using biodegradable parts cleaner and recycling used oil, oil filters and antifreeze.

Idle Reduction- Efforts are being made to reduce idling among fleet operations and increase awareness of the benefits of idle reduction. Idle reduction will improve air quality, extend the life of the engine and save on fuel costs.

Thank you,
